Private Soldiers

Buffalo County Veterans:
Remember the Sacrifice

The 2009 theme for the Buffalo County Historical Society is "Veterans," and on Monday, November 30, 2009, we will be hosting Buffalo County residents Al Kochenderfer and Steve Schiffli in the Buffalo County Courtroom. They will be sharing their experiences as chopper pilots (Al in Vietnam and Steve in Iraq). The talk is at 2:00 p.m., but there will be an open house from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the courthouse.

The Society also has the Private Soldiers exhibit on loan from the Wisconsin Historical Museum. This exhibit is in the hallways of the first and second floors of the Buffalo County Courthouse and is free to the public. The book that the exhibit is based on is available in our office or by clicking here. This exhibit chronicles the 2nd Battalion of the 127th Infantry as it spent one year in Iraq and tells the story of their deployment from a soldier-on-the-ground point of view. The exhibit has been made possible by generous grants from the Wisconsin Historical Museum, Pamela Mather, and Laurie Kelly Steffen.

If you have any questions or would be interested in helping to offset our costs for this exhibit, please contact Kelly at 608-685-6290 or at historical@buffalocounty.com.

Our office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  If your schedule requires you to come at a different time, please call and make an appointment by calling the office at 608-685-6290.
